British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of access tunnels leading to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as Daesh - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their bravery," he added. "They were among a great many British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
